Evolution of Nature 24, acrylic and mixed media on linen, 48×48” 2022.
Susan Swartz’s Evolution of Nature 24 takes center stage in this special exhibition supporting Instituto Terra, a visionary reforestation project founded by renowned Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado and his wife Lélia Deluiz Wanick. Dedicated to the regeneration of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, Instituto Terra has planted nearly three million native trees since 1998, restoring biodiversity, reviving over 2,000 water springs, and creating a powerful model for ecological renewal.
This event holds particular meaning for Swartz, a lifelong environmental advocate whose personal connection to nature is deeply embedded in her creative practice. The Evolution of Nature series emerged from her profound gratitude for the natural world—especially after recovering from two environmentally-borne illnesses. In this work, nature is both muse and medium: dried fruits, herbs, flowers, and nutrient-rich organic elements are layered into lush, sculptural canvases that celebrate the healing and transformative power of the earth.
Presented at Sotheby’s, Evolution of Nature 24 (48x48”) is a radiant and joyful example from the series, and Swartz is honored to offer the piece in support of a cause so closely aligned with her values. “I’m often described as an environmental artist and that is an honor,” she says. “But it is not a political stance for me. I seek to pay tribute to nature by painting the world as it is meant to be, so that we are inspired to protect it and take care of it.”
100% of the hammer price from the sale of Evolution of Nature 24—along with other designated artworks in the Sotheby’s Contemporary Discoveries online sale (September 23 – October 3, 2022)—will be donated directly to Instituto Terra. In addition, Sotheby’s will contribute 100% of its Overhead Premium and all Buyers Premium (net of expenses) from these works to the organization.
