HARVARD DIVINITY SCHOOL: Peripheries no. 5

A Journal of Word, Image, and Sound

Susan Swartz’s “Contemplation Sextet Series is featured on the cover of the fifth issue of Peripheries, the arts journal of the Harvard Divinity School (HDS).

Swartz began her connection with HDS in 2005 when she was invited to participate as an artist-in-resident, a distinguished position that granted Swartz space for creative exploration, resulting in a solo exhibition and a public lecture at the institution. Swartz was invited for second solo exhibition at HDS in 2012 as her work continued to evolve in exciting directions.

HDS describes Peripheries as a “non-profit literary and arts journal established in 2017 that publishes artistic work that is, broadly understood, ‘peripheral’; work that explores the interstices between discourses, traditions, languages, forms, and genres. In this spirit, along with publishing poetry, visual art, and short stories, [the] scope is expansive, including translations, interviews, creative nonfiction, reviews, aphorisms, recipes, instructions, and manifestos. Peripheries is proud to publish emerging writers, alongside established luminaries.”

“…not of but with the media of flowers and fruits…” describes Swartz’s 6 x 6’ painting, Evolution of Nature 20, Acrylic and mixed media on linen, 2021 in Peripheries no. 5 (p. 204)

Peripheries states “Swartz explores landscapes through potent colors and richly layered abstract paintings. Inspired by the intersection of art, nature, and spirituality, Swartz’s work reflects coastal splendor and mountain drama. Her international recognition most recently includes solo exhibitions at Galerie Noack, Berlin; Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing; and the Russian State Museum, St. Petersburg. Swartz’s work is in permanent museum collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, DC; Utah Museum of Fine Arts; and the International Olympic Museum, Switzerland. Her work is also on display in U.S. Embassies throughout the world through the Art in Embassies program.”
