Michael Dweck: Gaucho Gaucho

January 18-28, 2024

Curated by Michael Dweck and Cecilia Luppi

Michael Dweck is a visual artist, filmmaker, and photographer from Brooklyn, New York. A celebrated narrative photographer and powerful visual storyteller, Dweck explores the vastness of human experience with a detailed focus on identity and cultural adaptation. He was the first living photographer to have a solo exhibition at Sotheby’s and has received numerous awards including the Gold Lion award from the Cannes International Film Festival.

During the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Susan Swartz Studios displayed the still set and visually stunning photography from the award-winning documentary Gaucho Gaucho, directed by Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw, the duo responsible for Academy Award-Winning documentary The Truffle Hunters. Shot by Dweck, the collection of black and white photographs captures scenes from the lives of Argentine gauchos, a community of cowboys and cowgirls living beyond the modern world’s boundaries. A portion of proceeds from the sales of these photographs were donated to impact programs established in the Santa region where the documentary was filmed.

Do we want to add something about each scene being shot from a single vantage point without moving the camera? The film was basically shot as a photography piece which is what makes these photographs so cool.
